How to make a quote with ChatGPT as a tradesperson
Many tradespeople try writing quotes in ChatGPT. The text looks good, but the prices are guesses. Here's what ChatGPT is good at, where it goes wrong, and how to get real quotes with your own prices straight from the chat.
ChatGPT and Claude are good with language. Describe a job and you quickly get a tidy text split into materials and labour. But ask about prices and the chat guesses. It doesn't know your supplier, your net prices, your discounts or your hourly rate - and a quote with guessed prices either loses the job or loses money.
What ChatGPT is good at - and not
- Good at: understanding a job described in your own words, even short notes from site
- Good at: writing a clear job description and reservations for the customer
- Not good at: prices - the chat has no access to your price files and makes up plausible numbers
- Not good at: quantities per manufacturer specs, travel and your trade's rules
The fix: let the chat take the job and let Calco do the pricing
